Area Studies Certificates

The Area Studies Certificates have been slightly modified and are now defined as Interdisciplinary Minors offered through the College of Arts & Sciences.

Interdisciplinary minors allow OSU students to pursue their cross-disciplinary interests and receive recognition for their efforts. An interdisciplinary minor is granted upon completion of an OSU bachelor's degree and the specific requirements for the minor. Interdisciplinary minors are offered in African-American Studies, Ancient and Medieval Studies, Asian Studies, Central Asian Studies, Classical Studies, Hispanic and Latin American Studies, American Indian Studies, Russian and Eastern European Studies, and Women's Studies. Each minor has unique requirements as described below. It may be possible for students pursuing an interdisciplinary minor to take courses to be applied toward the minor by studying abroad during their undergraduate studies.             African-American Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor for students who would like to explore African-American issues and enhance the development of a multicultural orientation. Courses from Anthropology, English, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sociology are included in the curriculum. A minor in African-American Studies prepares the student for graduate or professional school or careers in business, education, management, law and government. The African-American Studies Minor requires a minimum of 18 semester hours of African-American related coursework, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors

Ancient and Medieval Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor for students who would like to explore Ancient and Medieval culture and civilization. The minor allows the student to take courses offered by various departments including Art, English, History, Music, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Theatre. Of special note is the emphasis placed on foreign language skills as a means of opening up the texts, sources, and traditions of these formative periods of Western Culture. Students are required to achieve language mastery equivalent to the first semester sophomore level in Greek, Latin, or Anglo-Saxon. The Ancient and Medieval Studies Minor requires a minimum of 23 hours of coursework, including the aforementioned language competency and 18 hours of non-language coursework related to the ancient and medieval civilizations, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors

Asian Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor for students who would like to explore Asian cultures and civilizations. The minor offers the student a specialized course of study in Asian cultures through language, history, art, philosophy, literature, religion, political science, and anthropology. Of special note is the emphasis placed on foreign language skills as a means of opening up the texts, sources, and traditions of Asian cultures. Candidates are encouraged to participate in a study abroad program in order to experience the culture and to enhance language skills. The Asian Studies Minor requires a minimum of 24 hours of coursework, including the aforementioned language competency and 18 hours of non-language coursework related to Asian culture, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors

Central Asian Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor for students who would like to explore Central Asian Studies and allows the student to take courses offered by various departments, including Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Political Science, Religious Studies, Geography, and Economics. Of special note is the emphasis placed on foreign language skills as a means of opening up the texts, sources, and traditions of Central Asian cultures. Students will be required to achieve language mastery equivalent to the first semester sophomore level in Russian. The Central Asian Studies Minor requires a minimum of 23 hours of coursework, including the aforementioned language competency and 18 hours of non-language coursework related to Central Asian cultures, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors

Classical Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor for students who would like to explore the Classical world. The minor allows the student to take courses offered by various departments including Art, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, and Philosophy. Of special note is the emphasis placed on foreign language skills as a means of opening up the texts, sources, and traditions of the Classical Period. Students are required to achieve language mastery by completing coursework through the second semester sophomore level in Greek or Latin. The Classical Studies Minor requires a minimum of 21 hours of coursework, including the aforementioned language competency and 9 hours of non-language coursework related to the Classical world, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors

 Hispanic and Latin American Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor for students who would like to explore Hispanic and Latin American cultures and allows the student to take courses offered by various departments such as History, Geography, Political Science, and Foreign Languages and Literatures. Of special note is the emphasis placed on foreign language skills as a means of opening up the texts, sources, and traditions of Hispanic and Latin American cultures. Students will be required to achieve language mastery equivalent to the first semester sophomore level in Spanish (or equivalent competency in Portuguese). Candidates are encouraged to participate in a study abroad minor in order to experience the culture and to develop language skills. The Hispanic and Latin American Studies Minor requires a minimum of 24 hours of coursework, including the aforementioned language competency and 18 hours of non-language coursework related to Hispanic and Latin American cultures, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors

American Indian Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor enabling the student to develop an expertise in American Indian Studies and enhance the development of a multicultural orientation. Specialization in American Indian Studies contributes to the academic preparation of individuals who plan to work in areas related to American Indian as well as non-Indian communities and programs, such as public administration, business administration, teaching, and social services. The minor also provides a background for students who plan graduate study or research on American Indian culture. The American Indian Studies Minor requires a minimum of 18 credit hours of coursework related to American Indian cultures, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors

Russian and Eastern European Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor for students who would like to explore Russian and Eastern European Studies and allows the student to take courses offered by various departments such as Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Geography, Political Science, Geography, and Economics. Of special note is the emphasis placed on foreign language skills as a means of opening up the texts, sources, and traditions of Russian and Eastern European culture. Students will be required to achieve language mastery equivalent to the first semester sophomore level in Russian. The Russian and Eastern European Studies Minor requires a minimum of 23 hours of coursework, including the aforementioned language competency and 18 hours of non-language coursework related to Russian and Eastern European cultures, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors

Women's Studies Minor... 

is an interdisciplinary minor for students who would like to explore women's issues. Courses focus on the interface of public and private spheres of women's lives and on issues such as gender, theories of inequality, women's language, racial and ethnic perspectives on women. Courses for the Minor come from English, Education, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. A minor in Women's Studies is helpful in preparing for graduate and professional schools or careers in counseling, social service, journalism, business, political science, and human environmental science. The Women's Studies Minor requires a minimum of 18 hours of coursework related to Women's Studies, as listed in the Requirements for Interdisciplinary Minors.
